Event 2: Griffith Observatory

For the second event, I visited Griffith Observatory. This was my first time visiting, and I was amazed by everything it had. To me, it was pretty much a space-science museum. I really enjoyed viewing all of the interactive exhibits. Since I am an astrophysics student, I had a lot of fun being able to relate the knowledge about space that I have learned in my astronomy courses to the information in the exhibitions that were at the observatory. During my visit, I noticed a prevalent connection made between science, specifically astronomy, and art, in the way that the science is presented in such an artistic manner.

Immediately upon entering the observatory, there is a large, beautifully painted ceiling. This reminded me of the art that one would see in a religious/traditional architecture building.

Another part of the observatory that I really enjoyed was the exhibit with the models of the planets of the solar system, which all had fun descriptions and interactive activities. These displays are all so artistic and creative, while explaining the science behind every model/activity, etc.

While I was at the Observatory, I reflected on how it can be tied back to concepts learned in this class in regards to the intersection of science and art. All of the displays of information were presented in such an artistic, attention-grabbing manner. The displays would explain and simplify scientific concepts, while presenting it in a way that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Overall, this was a totally engaging experience and I would definitely recommend others to visit the Griffith Observatory!

  1. Sites like this are important for furthering astronomy research since it helps increase the general public’s interest in space. Being casually interested in space themed science fiction novels myself, I’ve always wanted to visit this observatory but never made the time for it. But, looking at your photos, I think I will make the trip, especially with it coinciding with the topic covered in week nine.
